“Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings” – Nelson Mandela

Homelessness. It’s a harsh subject to discuss. But it must be discussed.

How would you describe homelessness? HUD describes it as “An individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. An individual or family who reside in a shelter or place not meant for human habitation and who is exiting an institution where he or she temporarily resided.” Homelessness and hunger for the homeless should not be an issue in the USA, not when there are 18,600,000 vacant homes (cdna.theactivist.com) and not when in the USA, 30-40% of the food supply is wasted, equaling more than 20 pounds of food per person per month (worldfoodtodayusa.org). With statistics like these we need change. Did you know 1 in 6 Americans struggles to get enough to eat? 2,723 babies are born into poverty each year and just alone in the Los Angeles County, each month 13,000 people fall into homelessness (LA Times).

Together we will lower these statistics; together we will come together and change the face of homelessness, because together we can make a difference. Reach out in your community, volunteer, be kind to others and spread the awareness so change can happen.

Let’s END homelessness.
